Form 5: The Most Symmetrical Pentatonic Scale Shape
Jul 19, 2025Guitarists everywhere are finally catching on that there’s more to the pentatonic scale than just Form 1, or what many call “Box 1”. But there’s one form that still flies under the radar—even though it’s much closer to you than you might even realize. I’m talking about Form 5 of the minor pentatonic scale. You may have seen it on a chart or stumbled across it on a warm-up drill, but chances are, you’ve never truly unlocked its full potential.
Most players overlook this shape because it doesn’t show up as frequently as Form 1, but that’s exactly why it sounds fresh and exciting when you learn to wield it. In this lesson, I’m going to walk you through Form 5, show you how to use it to break out of the box, and you’ll see why it’s one of my favorite pentatonic shapes.
Grab your guitar, get comfy, and let’s breathe new life into your pentatonic playing.
